W. K. Kellogg Radiation Laboratory

Much of Caltech's research in nucleosynthesis—the process, occurring within stars, by which heavier elements are created from the fusion of lighter ones—takes place in Kellogg Radiation Lab. The late Caltech alumnus William Fowler (PhD '36) received the 1983 Noble Prize in Physics for his work in this area. The high-current, high-stability particle accelerator in Kellogg was custom designed by Caltech physicists to study nuclear astrophysics, and is the only one of its kind in the world.
